Black Kitchen Cabinets

There is a growing trend in cabinet making to paint kitchen cabinets black. This is difficult to fathom because black is so absent of any color (obviously), but it actually adds a modern look to the room without having to redesign everything. The best way to make the room look modern is to paint the cabinets black. More importantly, it is incredibly inexpensive and can make old cabinets as good as new. Finally, the process of painting cabinets black is really quite simple. Follow these few steps and you’ll have the perfect black, modern looking cabinets.

  • Sand the cabinets down. This is the first step when doing anything to cabinets because you need to get rid of all of the old stuff. You might clean the cabinets first with ammonia to get rid of any grime, but in the end, a good sanding gets rid of everything. After doing a rough sand, use a finer sandpaper to get rid of any bumps and scratches in the wood. Go in a circular motion and make sure you get everything. You don’t want to have a messy looking cabinet because of laziness during this step. Clean the cabinets with soap and water to get rid of any saw dust.
  • Apply painter’s tape around the corners of the cabinets, on the counter tops, above the cabinets so that you don’t get any of the paint on the walls or counters. You can get this tape in a huge roll at your local hardware store. Typically, it comes in blue and it ensures that you don’t make a mess, but it can also offer some very straight edges if you are ever painting walls and decide to add stripes of some sort.
  • Paint the primer onto the cabinets. It is advised to use black or grey primer. We use primer because it seals very tightly to the cabinets, holds the paint nicely, but more importantly, protects the paint so that it doesn’t chip as easily. Use two coats of primer. After applying the first coat, let it dry for four hours, then apply the second coat, wait for four hours and then look at it. If the cabinets were black already, you don’t need to apply primer; however, if they were any other color, the primer ensures that the black paint is all you see.
  • Add the black paint. This is the final step and is really a dummy step because you need to add the paint to have black cabinets. You can use a large brush, but when you get to the edges, use a smaller one so that you can get the exact areas of the cabinets. Use an up and down motion so you can limit the amount of bristle marks that appear in the paint once it dries. You’ll want to apply at least four coats of this to ensure that it is entirely black. This may take a few days, but it’ll pay off in the end.

Black cabinets are really contemporary and offer a modern look. It would be really expensive to replace all the counter tops and appliances to have a more modern-day look. Because of this, it is advised to paint the cabinets black because this makes them look modern. However, if the room is already black, adding black cabinets would just make the room look too dark and depressing. With a black room, try and mix it up a little and throw in white cabinets. The black and white checker look really has an exceptional look to it that many people can appreciate.

Refacing Kitchen Cabinet Doors

When people decide that it is time to replace their cabinets, it is typically because the cabinet doors are all dinged up and don’t look nice like they once did. It isn’t typically an issue of the actual cabinet having problems. Because of this, people assume that they need to go get new cabinets to replace the current ones. This isn’t the case, though. There is a way to make the cabinets that you have right now look as good and as clean as new without having to go out and purchase new cabinets. It’s a great way to save money and keep the cabinets that you wanted from the beginning.

This technique is called refacing cabinet doors. As the name implies, what you are going to be doing is actually giving the face of the cabinet door a redo so that whatever dings and dirt might be an issue for it currently won’t be after the refacing. What you’ll need to successfully and effectively reface your kitchen cabinet doors are the following things:

  • New hardware. This includes new knobs, pulls, handles, and hinges.
  • New paint and finish.
  • Sand paper

The first step to refacing cabinet doors to get rid all of the hardware.  If you are going with a totally new look in the kitchen, you want new hardware to go along with it. Make sure that you get hardware that really matches what you are looking for. If you put in new appliances, see what sort of look they have and try and match the hardware with it. However, don’t put the hardware on yet. You need to strip the cabinet door clean.

Stripping the cabinet door clean is the next step. Get rid of the old look so that the door is bare once again. The best way to do this is to use sand paper. You can sand away all of the old paint as well as any dirt and the such. This is a messy job and can be unhealthy because breathing in saw dust is never good. So, wear a mask while doing it. Get rid of all the old cabinet so that it is a piece of wood again with the basic design on the front of it. Use a much finer piece of sand paper afterwards to get rid of any jagged parts and to make it so the door is smooth once again.

The next step is to apply the paint and finish to the wood. If you want to go with a more natural look, finishes are a great way to give it a great wood look where you can appreciate the grain of it. If you decide to go with paint, the grain of the wood disappears some under the coats of paint, but it can make the cabinets really fit in place in the room you’ve designed. The kitchen is one of the most visited rooms, so you want your refaced cabinets to look good.

The final step is to add the new hardware that you purchased for the cabinets. Because you are refacing the cabinet doors, you’re probably going to need to use hardware that fits in the same style that the previous hardware did because of already drilled holes for the screws. However, there are still a lot of different samples out there to choose from that can make this last step very enjoyable.

A lot of people dread having to go out and purchase new cabinets because it can get expensive, especially if you want to get higher quality cabinets. You don’t need to go out and spend an arm and a leg, though, to get new looking cabinets in your kitchen. Instead, the only thing you need to do is get some new paint or finish, sand paper, and some new hardware and fix up the old cabinets. There’s a reason you liked them to begin with. Just fix them up, sand them down, add new paint, and screw on some new hardware and the old, dingy cabinets that you once loved will now be the new, stylish cabinets you currently love. It isn’t tough and it definitely isn’t an expensive project.

Thinking of attempting it on your own? Here’s a pretty basic DIY video to watch.

[See image gallery at www.tahlequahpainting.com] For those who want to opt for new kitchen cabinets, make sure you choose wisely!

There are a considerable number of types of cabinets that can be used in a house; however, the types that should be used all depend on the type of house that you have and the type of design that you have going for it. If you have a more modern look with metal furniture, it would not be wise to go with a light-colored wood cabinet because the look wouldn’t fit, for example. Therefore, there are a ton of decisions to make when trying to decide what types of cabinets to get.

The following things are important to keep in mind when picking cabinets for your house. Knowing these things will make the cabinet purchasing and building much easier:

  • Feel of the room: As mentioned in the above paragraph, if you are going for a modern look to your site, it would be incredibly foolish to try and throw together very traditional looking cabinets because these don’t fit with the style that you are going with. Instead of going with a traditional look, it would be wise to install dark or black wood cabinets or, if you’re feeling very modern, use metal cabinets.
  • Functional capacity: If you are going for a cabinet that is going to hold a lot of material, it is important to use a stronger wood and heavy-duty screws because they will be able to carry the burden. Using lighter woods or weak nails would cause the cabinets to not only break from within, but potentially fall off of the wall because of the increased weight inside the cabinet.
  • Cost: As cliché as it might seem, cost is one of the biggest deciding factors for people when they decide to go with cabinets. Pre-assembled cabinets are typically much cheaper than custom made cabinets because of mass-production. If a company can only make a single cabinet with that design, they are going to charge a lot more than if they are able to mass-produce it. If you want custom, expect to spend more money on it.
  • Material: Do you want to have plain wood cabinets, or do you want to put glass in it and give it a classier look? Do you want to use particle board or plywood? This ties in with the cost, but the materials that are needed for the cabinets is important to keep in mind because it helps to determine the design that can be implemented. The better you’ve designed the cabinets and the stronger materials that you pick, the better the cabinets will work functionally speaking.

Cabinets are a great way to add storage to the room, but to also give a more complete feel to it. Cabinets are another way to add decoration to the room and that means it is important to pick the proper cabinets. Whether you are looking for cabinets for your office, kitchen, or bathroom, picking the right cabinet falls on the above four points. What is the feel, how functional do you want them to be, what can you afford, and finally, what sorts of material do you want to use?

Answer the above four questions in whatever way you will and determine what you feel is the best bet for your house. In the end, you can custom make any cabinet even if you purchase ready built cabinets. Find what fits best for your wallet, house, and functional needs. Then, you will be able to design your house in the best way. This will make the house more appealing and comfortable to live in. Finally, it will give you a little more storage.

Wall Finishing Options

The walls take up most of the room’s space. It is a big blank canvas in which an artist, or even the regular homeowner, could work on. The walls can enhance a room’s design or bring together the whole look you want to have. It can also be a way to hide the room’s flaws and weaker points. Walls can enliven the room and set the mood for it.

Before deciding on how to treat your walls with wall finish, first asses what the basics are. Does the room have enough natural or artificial light? Is the room big or small? Are the architectural designs something you would like to be more obvious or less obvious? Here are some elements you need to know, before deciding on what to do with your room’s walls.

Cool Wall Paint Ideas

[See image gallery at www.tahlequahpainting.com] Most people prefer paint as wall finish. It is cheaper, easier to do and can come in various textures and technique. There are a thousand of colors to choose for painting your walls. A lot of paint shops and home centers have palettes for you to play around with.

When you’ve chosen the shade you would like to have, you can then decide on what paint technique to use. These are some of the decorative techniques used to treat walls: combing, granite-finish, color washing, marbling, crackling, sponging, ragging and stripping. Sponging and marbling effects used to be a popular choice, but these days, homeowners opt for a more subdued application like color washing and combing, because they add texture and intensity without being too obvious.

With a paint finish, remember that:

  • Matte paints absorb light the most and may be a good choice for the living room
  • Semi gloss or gloss bounces light and can be easily cleaned by scrubbing. It is ideal for areas where many activities happen. This treatment however, highlights the wall’s imperfection
  • Water based paint is most preferred versus an oil based paint. Water based paints do not have any odor and are easy-drying. They are also easier to clean.

Cool Wallpaper Ideas

[See image gallery at www.tahlequahpainting.com] Wallpapers can soften a room’s look, as well as add dimension to it. It can serve as a backdrop to a dull looking room. It can even hide some of the imperfections by creating illusions. If the room is too small or too boxy, for example, choosing the right wallpaper design can make it appear larger and roomier.

Wallpapers are not that difficult to install. It is normally applied over drywall, or plaster or even existing wallpaper.

With a wallpaper finish, remember that:

  • Traditional designs come in a variety of hues that add texture.
  • Embossed wallpapers create interesting stucco designs that can make a contemporary room look differently.
  • Wallpapers also come in silk or natural fibre. These types create a basic and neutral backdrop.
  • Vinyl wallpaper is best for kitchen or bathroom use. This material tends to resist moisture.
  • Some designs, like those made in foil or are uncoated, may be a little difficult to install, so it is a good idea to let professionals do it.
  • Although wallpaper installation is relatively easy and having them on the walls can do a lot for the room, they are somewhat prone to wear, tear and damage. It is, after all, just paper.

Cool Wall Molding Ideas

[See image gallery at www.tahlequahpainting.com] Wall treatments like moldings and baseboards can lend character to a space. They may be used to divide or define spaces, depending on style and scale. Moldings are back in style and can be found at many home centers and lumber shops. Some specialty shops may even offer you a wider section and do custom made designs.

With moldings, remember that:

  • Elaborate moldings can enhance rooms to make it grander
  • But smaller rooms need not have it because it will overpower the look of the room
  • Pinewood or hardwood are best for stained look, but if you are looking for a plain molding to paint on, choose medium density fibreboard (MDF) materials.

  • Prepare the room for painting. Remove all furniture from the room, or move it to the center of the room and cover it with drop cloths. Remove any switch plates, outlet covers, or other fixtures from the walls. Fill any holes or cracks with spackling compound and sand them smooth.
  • Protect the floor. Cover the floor with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect it from paint drips. Make sure to overlap the edges of the drop cloths to ensure that the floor is completely covered.
  • Prime the walls. If you are painting over a dark color or applying a light-colored paint to a wall that has never been painted before, it is recommended to prime the walls first. This will help the paint adhere better and ensure an even finish.
  • Cut in the corners and edges. Using a paintbrush, carefully paint around the edges of the room, including the corners and any trim or molding. Use a steady hand and take your time to get a clean, straight line.
  • Roll the paint onto the walls. Once you have cut in the corners and edges, use a paint roller to apply the paint to the rest of the walls. Start at the top of the wall and work your way down, rolling the paint in a “W” pattern to ensure even coverage.
  • Allow the paint to dry. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for drying time. Once the paint is dry, you can remove the drop cloths and move the furniture back into the room.
  • Touch up any missed spots. Use a small paintbrush to touch up any areas that you may have missed while painting.
  • I hope this helps! If you have any questions or need further guidance, don’t hesitate to ask.

As experienced deck staining experts, we have collected a few tried and tested techniques for doing the job right. While we don’t want to give away all our secrets, we are willing to share some with our dear readers.

If you’re planning to spend an afternoon deck staining anytime soon, give these tips a read. They could make the job a little easier!

    PSE

The first piece of advice we’re going to offer is the same as in our fence staining post. PSE, Pay Someone Else. Staining is a dirty, smelly, unpleasant job and not something we would willingly do under normal circumstances.

We are strange enough to enjoy it but we appreciate that not everyone is going to have the same opinion.

If you can, pay a professional to stain your deck. It’s easier, will take less time and you will likely have a better result at the end.

    Proper preparation…

You know the 6P rule and this is a case in point. Proper preparation definitely prevents poor performance.

The wood needs to be clean before staining. If you’re lucky, that just means running a broom over the deck to remove any debris. If you’re not so lucky, you’ll need to remove mold or mildew or that new timber mill-scale that prevents the stain from bonding.

    Rinse the deck thoroughly

Once brushed and prepared, give the deck a good clean. Use a pressure washer or garden hose. Either way, make sure the deck is as clean as possible and free from anything that will get in the way of the stain.

    Wood brighteners are a thing

There is a little-known product called a wood brightener. It’s a chemical that opens up the pores of the lumber and refreshes the surface to make it look like new.

If your deck is old or overly dark, use some wood brightener on it first and see how well it comes up!

Most wood brighteners come in a spray. Spray it into the deck, leave it a short time and rinse off using a garden hose. Read the instructions fully, but that’s the usual process.

Use a good quality deck stain

Stay away from own brand wood stains and invest in the good stuff. It will repay your investment by giving you a better finish, being easier to apply and perhaps requiring fewer coats.

We won’t name names here but you know the branded products from the own brands. Shop around, read reviews and invest in quality. It will definitely repay you in kind.

Check the weather forecast before you begin

Wood stain and damp wood don’t mix, so check the forecast before you begin. If you live somewhere changeable, make sure you have had a couple days of sunshine so the wood is dry and will have a couple more days of sunshine or fair weather so the stain can dry.

    Use a synthetic brush

Synthetic brushes work best with wood stains as they don’t lose their rigidity and go limp like natural bristles. Natural brushes are great for many things but deck staining are not one of those things.

Invest in a good quality synthetic brush for the same reasons you invest in a good quality wood stain. The finish will be better, the process easier and the brush will be much nicer to use.
